About this book

A gentle course of fifteen evening lessons in chair yoga and meditation for beginners who would like to sleep better. Each lesson explains one part of sleep, breathing, movement or attention, then guides a complete thirty-minute practice in an ordinary chair and ends with a short summary.

Thirty minutes in a chair each evening, to close the day gently and move toward sleep.

Many people reach the end of the day stiff, tired and still busy inside. This book offers a quiet way to close the evening: thirty minutes on an ordinary, sturdy chair, with slow movement, slow breathing and calm attention. No flexibility, fitness or experience is needed, and you never have to get down on the floor.

The book is built as a course of fifteen evening lessons. In each chapter a kind teacher speaks to a small class of beginners: first a clear lecture on one subject, such as the body clock, the stages of sleep, the breath, sitting well, the neck and shoulders, the spine, the legs and feet, the hands, attention or the body scan; then one complete thirty-minute practice, described in words from where each movement starts to how you come back; and at the end a summary of the evening.

Every practice has the same five parts, arriving, breathing, moving, stillness and closing, so that it soon becomes a familiar habit that leads you toward bed. Later lessons show how to meet worries at night, what to do when you wake in the small hours, how light and evening habits shape sleep, and how to build your own evening practice.

After reading this book, you will be able to…

  • Set up a safe chair and space, and practise within the rule of comfort
  • Use a slow, slightly longer breath out to help the body move from busy mode to resting mode
  • Do gentle seated movements for the neck, shoulders, spine, hips, legs, hands and arms
  • Practise simple meditation, a body scan and kind wishes in a chair
  • Build your own thirty-minute evening practice and a calmer path to bed

From the publisher

A calm, clear evening course that makes yoga and meditation possible for almost anyone with a chair.

Many yoga books begin on the floor and assume a flexible body. This one begins with an ordinary chair and a tired person at the end of the day. Each chapter reads like an evening class with a patient teacher: a short, clear lecture, then a full thirty-minute practice in which every movement is explained slowly, from the starting position to the way back.

The lessons on sleep explain the body clock, the build-up of sleepiness through the day and the stages of sleep in plain words, and then show how slow breathing, gentle movement and calm attention can help the body and mind settle. The rule of comfort runs through every page: move only as far as feels comfortable, stop and rest at pain, dizziness or breathlessness, and come out of every movement slowly.

Because every practice keeps the same five parts, the course builds into a habit that readers can keep. The chapters on worry, waking in the night and evening habits are practical and kind, and the last lesson helps each reader put together a personal evening practice.

What we like

  • Fifteen evening lessons, each with a lecture, a complete thirty-minute practice and a summary
  • Every movement done sitting on an ordinary chair and described step by step in words
  • Clear explanations of sleep, the breath, posture and attention for complete beginners
  • A short night version for waking in the small hours, and a guide to building your own practice

Recommended for

  • Beginners who would like to try yoga and meditation in a simple, gentle way
  • People who feel stiff or tired in the evening and would like to sleep better
  • Anyone who prefers to practise in a chair rather than on the floor

If you have a long-term health condition, are in pain, or are pregnant, please talk to a doctor before you begin this practice.
