About this book

Do you rewrite messages again and again before sending them, say yes when you mean no, or lie awake wondering what someone thought of you? Living Without Approval looks at these everyday patterns through the ideas of Alfred Adler (1870–1937), the doctor who founded individual psychology and who believed that our deepest wish is to belong.

How to stop living for other people's approval, with the ideas of Alfred Adler.

In fifteen chapters, the book explains Adler's key ideas in plain language: the difference between approval and belonging, how the meaning we give our past shapes us, why everyone feels small sometimes, and why contribution brings a steadier sense of worth than applause. It also explores practical tools from the teachers who followed him, such as asking "whose task is this?", encouraging instead of praising, and finding the courage to be imperfect.

Each chapter begins with an everyday scene and follows several people of different ages and lives as they try one idea at work, at home, with friends, with partners and in their families. Each ends with practical steps, a short exercise and a summary. The book is clear about where evidence is mixed, as with birth order.
