About this book

Most of us will never rule anything. But every working day asks for judgment: whom to trust, when to speak up, how to prepare for change, how to handle a difficult colleague, how to keep our footing when a job is lost. The Quiet Prince reads Niccolò Machiavelli, author of The Prince and the Discourses, for ordinary working people who govern the small territory of their own working lives.

Machiavelli's clear eye, put to work for honest people in ordinary jobs.

In fifteen chapters, the book draws practical lessons from Machiavelli's clearest observations: seeing work as it really is, building embankments against bad fortune in calm weeks, developing skills that are truly your own, recognizing flattery and manipulation, leading with respect rather than fear, introducing change wisely, dealing with small problems before they grow, disagreeing openly and well, and keeping your dignity when you lose a position.

The book is honest about Machiavelli's darker advice. Where he recommended deception, cruelty or rule by fear, it says so plainly and explains why a decent worker should not follow him, while still learning to see such behaviour in others. Each chapter follows people in many kinds of jobs and ends with practical steps, a short exercise and a summary. Passages from Machiavelli are paraphrased and cited by chapter.
