About this book

Flour, water, salt and a little yeast are enough to make most of the world's breads. This book starts even simpler, with honey oat balls that need no oven, and goes step by step to pretzels, braided loaves, steamed buns, sourdough and butter crescents: 61 breads and snacks from many lands, easiest first, each one made with children at a long kitchen table.

One long day at the kitchen table, 61 recipes from faraway kitchens, and a memory for every one.

Anton, an old baker who worked in kitchens far from home, and Vera, his neighbour, a grandmother who bakes with the children of the street, talk their way through a whole day of baking. The book is divided into the times of that day, from before breakfast to night, and the recipes grow a little harder with every chapter, so that each one teaches a skill the next will use.

Every recipe says clearly which steps a child can do and which belong to a grown-up, with quantities, oven temperatures and times written so that you can bake from the text alone. Each brings one memory of the people who made it far away, a question and its answer, a three-question mini quiz, and, for about half of the recipes, a drink to pour beside it.

From the publisher

A gentle kitchen conversation that teaches bread from the very first dough.

The two voices at the table give this book its warmth. Anton remembers the flatbreads of hot, dusty lands and the sweet buns of snowy towns; Vera asks the questions every beginner wants to ask. Between them, the basics of bread arrive one at a time: a first dough of flour and water, then quick breads, yeast, kneading, shaping, steaming and, at night, slow doughs and sourdough.

The recipes are practical and safe for families, with the oven, the stove and boiling water always left to a grown-up, and small tasks for even the youngest hands. The memories are short and kind, and the questions, quizzes and lists of new words make it easy to bake and learn together.

What we like

  • 61 breads and snacks from many lands, in order from the easiest to the hardest
  • Clear steps for children and for grown-ups, with safety at the oven and the stove
  • One memory for every recipe, and a drink to pair with about half of them

Recommended for

  • Parents and grandparents who want to bake bread and snacks with children
  • Anyone curious about the breads and sweets of other countries
