About this book

Is this it? Sooner or later, most of us ask what our life is for. Nobody hands us the answer, and that can feel frightening. A group of remarkable thinkers took this feeling seriously and found in it not despair but freedom: the freedom to make meaning through how we live.

Sartre, Camus and their companions on making a meaningful life, one ordinary day at a time.

Meaning Is Made introduces the ideas of Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Simone de Beauvoir and Søren Kierkegaard in plain, warm language, and brings them into ordinary life. It explains why we have no instruction manual, why freedom can feel dizzying, how to choose when there is no right answer, the roles we hide behind, the absurd and the stone of Sisyphus, life under the eyes of others, why our freedom depends on the freedom of others, how we keep becoming at every age, everyday decency, commitment, facing the end and making meaning on ordinary days.

Each chapter begins with an everyday scene, explains one idea and the book it comes from, shows it at work in lives of different ages and situations, and ends with practical steps, a short written exercise and answers to common questions. The philosophers' ideas are described in the author's own words, and the book is honest about where interpretations differ.
