About this book

Most worry arrives quietly: an unanswered message, a test result that has not come yet, a quiet month at work, a child driving home late at night. Calm in Chaos looks at these everyday worries through the eyes of the Stoic philosophers Epictetus, Seneca and Marcus Aurelius, who lived through slavery, exile, war and plague and still asked a practical question: how can a person stay steady when life is uncertain?

Two thousand years of Stoic calm, for the worries of an ordinary day.

In fifteen chapters, the book explains their central ideas in plain language: sorting what is up to you from what is not, separating facts from the stories the mind adds, meeting the future one day at a time, rehearsing hard moments so they lose their power, and doing your best while letting go of results. Each chapter begins with an everyday scene, explains one Stoic idea with short passages paraphrased from the original works and cited by section, follows several people of different ages and lives as they use it, and ends with practical steps, a short exercise and a summary.

Topics include worry about health, money, other people's opinions, difficult people, anger, the people we love, work, sudden change and building a simple morning and evening practice.
